BDE Webinar: New General Data Protection Regulation Adopted

On April 14 the European Parliament adopted the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which was presented by the European Commission in January 2012. The Regulation shall apply 2 years after its formal adoption by the European Parliament and Council which now is the case. The regulations for processing personal data affect large areas of European research and are of great importance to the scientific communities and research infrastructures of Europe.

The demand for stronger protection and harmonization of rules and practices across Europe, has been an important driving force behind the proposed data protection regulation in EU.

The question is now is how the new legislation balances the interest in privacy against the use for historical, statistical and scientific purposes. It is also whether the regulations, in line with the legislators’ intention, ensure greater harmonisation and standardisation in the field of data protection and thus make it easier to exchange data and stimulate increased research collaboration across national boundaries.

This presentation will take a closer look at these issues, discussing how the new GDPR will affect data collection, data use, data preservation and data sharing.

After the presentation a moderated Q&A Session opens the floor to the webinar participants to raise & discuss questions on the topic!
