GRANT TYPE 1 - Training in taxonomy and collection management & access to collections in Belgium
Who can apply?
If you are able to answer “yes” to the questions below, you are eligible to receive financial support from the Belgian Development Cooperation through the Belgian GTI program.
- Does your project address clear taxonomic and/or curatorial components?
- Does your project address priority taxonomic and/or curatorial key gaps of your country or region?
- Does your project aim at building taxonomic and curatorial expertise in your country or region?
- Are you a citizen of Algeria - Benin* - Burkina Faso* - Burundi* - Cabo Verde - Cambodia - Cote d'Ivoire - DR Congo* - Gambia - Ghana - Guinea* - Guinea Bissau - Kenya - Laos - Liberia - Mali* - Morocco* - Mozambique* - Niger* - Nigeria - Palestinian Territory* - Rwanda* - Senegal* - Sierra Leone - Tanzania* - Thailand - Togo - Uganda* - Vietnam (Priority is given to projects taking place in countries belonging to the 14 priority partner countries of governmental cooperation (with an asterisk in the above list).
- Are you in any way linked to a scientific institution with which the Belgian GTI NFP has a privileged relationship?
- Are you younger than 40?
- Do you hold - at least - a Bachelor degree?
It is very important that applicants clearly state in their project:
- How they plan to use their projects to advance research in their field;
- How they will disseminate their results (poster, publication, diploma, oral communication, etc…);
- How their project will contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and/or ecosystem services in the partner country;
- How their project could (in a long or medium term) contribute to fight against poverty in the South.
With what kind of project can I apply?
Only pure taxonomic projects (e.g. elaboration of checklists, taxonomic revisions, …) or biodiversity assessment projects with a strong taxonomic component (e.g. inventory and monitoring of biodiversity,…) for which the grant seeker needs training or access to Belgium-based collections, expertise or infrastructure, will be considered.
Only project on extant taxa will be considered, with priority for zoological taxa.
How can I apply?
You must enter your project proposal via our pre-formatted application form.
All projects application form must be complemented with an up to date curriculum vitae and a digital passport photo.
All candidates will receive acknowledgment of receipt when the Belgian GTI NFP receives their application form.

When can I apply?
Only when the call is open. The 2017 call is currently open for applications until 19 February 2017.
How will my project proposal be reviewed?
Successful projects demonstrate a firm commitment to increase human and institutional taxonomic and/or collection management capacity. The favorable outcome of the applications will depend on the quality of the submitted project, the quality of the candidate as judged from his CV, the eligibility of the candidate and the expertise, collections and infrastructure available at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and in Belgium.
When will selected projects be executed?
Selected projects will be executed before the end of December.
The Belgian GTI NFP will, via email, agree with the selected candidate on the time, duration and other practical modalities of the foreseen study visit. On average a study visit lasts 2-4 weeks, but longer periods are possible if the candidate can produce complementary funding.
What is covered by this grant?
The Belgian GTI NFP will cover all transport (both national and international), housing, insurance and daily allowance costs associated with the study visit to Belgium.
The selected candidate will also be assisted in regard to visa and other administrative procedures linked to the planned study visit.
