Exploring Linked Data : for learners and instructors

The RDF-modeled Linked Data for Professional Education (LD4PE) Competency Index is designed to help learners and instructors identify and prioritize their skills for developing proficiency in Linked Data.

“Understanding Linked Data standards and practices has become a key requirement for information professionals … This urgent need to develop Linked Data competencies in the professional workforce is driving major initiatives to provide learning resources (LR) about the underlying standards and data model” (LD4PE Overview).

The Linked Data for Professional Education (LD4PE) project

 - funded by the U.S. Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and supported by Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI), UW iSchool, Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) –

intends to develop a Linked Data Exploratorium referatory for Linked Data learning resources descriptions that map the resources to a Competency index for Linked Data and the supporting infrastructure including metadata editors:

Building Learning Modules around the Competency Index for Linked Data, M. Lei Zeng, 2017 iConference, March 22-25, 2017 Wuhan, China.

LD4PE: A Competency-Based Framework for DCMI's Professional Education and Training Agenda, T. Baker, DC-2015 Conference.

The Competency index for Linked Data (CI)  is a set of topically arranged assertions of the knowledge, skills and habits of mind required for professional practice in the area of Linked Data:

The index is organized hierarchically, going from broad topic clusters down to specific benchmarks:

 TOPIC CLUSTER

— Topic
—  — Competency: Tweet-length assertion of knowledge, skill, or habit of mind
—  —  — Benchmark: Action demonstrating accomplishment in related competencies

During the project period, interested parties can provide assistance in two areas:

  1. Suggesting competency statements (assertions of what a learner of Linked Data should know or be able to do); and
  2. Identifying existing web-accessible learning resource from short recipe videos to large learning units that address one or more Linked Data competencies.
