FAOLEX : national laws, regulations and policies on food, agriculture at one click !

FAOLEX is a comprehensive and up-to-date legislative and policy database, one of the world's largest electronic collection of national laws, regulations and policies on food, agriculture and natural resources management. Users of FAOLEX have direct access to the abstracts and indexing information about each text, as well as to the full text of the legislation and policies contained in the database.

FAO of the UN has been committed to the collection and dissemination of legal, governance and policy information for more than 70 years. Its core mandate has always included the collection, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of information relating to nutrition, food and agriculture.

Administered by the Development Law Service (LEGN) of the FAO Legal Office, FAOLEX complements FAO’s core function of advising its Members on legal and institutional means to promote and regulate national development and international cooperation in the food and agriculture sector. 

FAOLEX is constantly being updated, with an average of 8,000 new entries per year. It currently contains legal and policy documents drawn from more than 200 countries, territories and regional economic integration organizations and originating in over 40 languages.

In addition to searching directly in its main database, FAOLEX presents certain thematic databases organized by specific subject matter. It is also possible to access general country profiles, as well as country profiles for certain sectors. The FAO Legal Office also collaborates with other FAO and non-FAO initiatives by facilitating the integration of FAOLEX data into separate platforms or by the systematic exchange and linking of information:

Pastoralist Knowledge Hub is an initiative bringing together pastoralists and the main actors working with them to join forces and create the synergies for dialogue and pastoralist development.

Database on Port State Measures presents legislative measures adopted by States to prevent, deter and eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing (IUU fishing).

Agroecology Knowledge Hub has been identified as an integration of science, practices and social processes this platform provides updates on current states of knowledge on these three aspects.

National Aquaculture Legislative Overview is a series of comparative national overviews of aquaculture laws and regulations from leading aquaculture producing countries.

ECOLEX includes information on treaties, international soft-law and other non-binding policy and technical guidance documents, national legislation, judicial decisions, and law and policy literature.

Database of Measures on Conservation and Management of Sharks is a FAO-administered collection of instruments addressing the conservation and management of sharks.

Family Farming Knowledge Platform is a FAO portal containing information on family farming and includes national laws and regulations, public policies, best practices, data and statistics and various publications.

Gender and Land Rights Database contains country profiles of national legal frameworks, policies and programmes supporting the advancement of women or inducing gender-differentiated access to land. 

GFCM National Legislation Database provides information on the principal measures adopted by the GFCM Contracting Parties, Cooperating non-Contracting Parties and relevant non-Contracting Parties in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

 

In FAOLEX, the key elements of each legal or policy document are summarized in English, French or Spanish, and indexed to facilitate search and retrieval. The terms and conditions applicable to the use of the FAO website apply to use of the FAOLEX database.
