Join the Open Data Revolution to end global hunger

GODAN is calling upon for the signing of the petition to urge governments, the private sector, and civil society to provide data on agriculture and nutrition to end world hunger.

The challenge…

This petition comes amidst the challenge of lack of information and data in the fight to global hunger. Here is the paradox, experts agree that there is more than enough food produced to feed everyone, yet 795 million people still struggle with hunger every day. We can tell where the world’s hungry are, but expert lack the best data to support efforts to fight hunger. This is the raison d'etre of the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition’s (GODAN) existence.

The Petition call…

Sign the petition now, and we’ll use your voices to create a massive handover at the UN in mid-September where the key governments and officials will gather with the UN Secretary-General to decide the future of development data.

By signing, you’ ll be joining more than 300 organisations around the world who have already said they support open data to fight hunger, and with your voice, we can ensure that politicians face unstoppable momentum to sign up too.

The Petition Text …

Dear political, business, civil society and community leaders from around the world,

Join the Open Data Revolution to end global hunger.

Nearly 800 million people struggle with debilitating hunger and malnutrition in every corner of the globe. That’s one in every nine people, with the majority being women and children.

With open data, a mother in Malawi can choose seeds for a plentiful harvest to feed her hungry family, a farmer in the United States can make their soil nutrient-rich again, and a smallholder farmer in Tanzania will know market conditions to get more money for their harvest.

We are convinced that the solution to eliminating hunger lies within existing, but often unavailable, agriculture and nutrition data.

The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) initiative is committed to closing this unacceptable hunger gap by making agriculture and nutrition data available, accessible and useable to everyone.

This data, now locked and unseen in government, private sector and civil society datasets, needs to be identified and made open and available. We call on you to support this global action to get every government, non-governmental, international and private sector organization to make agriculture and nutrition data available, accessible and usable.

Farmers, farmer organizations, researchers, extension experts, policy makers, governments, and other private sector and civil society stakeholders are all involved in building a food secure world.
