Focus on the Research Data Management Online Course in Spanish 

The Research Data Management Online Course has provided training in the area of research data management and focused especially on Latin America. The training course was implemented in Spanish from the 6th of October and until the 30th of October. 

It has been jointly organized by the Agricultural Data Interest Group (IGAD) of the Research Data Alliance (RDA), the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the Polytechnic University of Valencia and FAO of United Nations.

The course had the objective to present and explain the processes that affect the whole life cycle of research data, including curation, search, preservation, sharing, funding and usage. It integrated practical and interactive elements (like practical tests, webinars and a life forum) in a theoretical framework and provided information on tools, strategies and use cases within the area of open science. 

Out numerous applications, 35 persons from 14 countries in Latin America and Europe have been accepted for the training. These participants get frequently in touch with agricultural research data management and cover different professions like librarians, researchers, information managers and project leaders.

The selected participants have been chosen regarding their relation to agriculture and the possibility to share the learnt skills. Depending on the feedback of the participants, further trainings will be organize that will focus on specific topics in the same area.

Highlights from the Community

  • Migration from "Anancy" to CGSpace completed: Open Access to 40,000 records on metadata for research output.  Through the successful migration, CGSpace has become an open data repository with over 40,000 records. More info

  • Release of TDL Descriptive Metadata Guidelines for ETDs. The Texas Digital Library has announced the release of the Texas Digital Library Descriptive Metadata Guidelines for Electronic Theses and Dissertations, v2. More info

  • Global Panel technical brief: advocating for improved metrics and data for effective food system policies. The high level initiative "Global Panel" underlines the need for quality and quantity of food data in the 2nd Technical Brief. More info

  • BigDataEurope workshop on “Big data for food, agriculture and forestry: opportunities and challenges” held in Paris on 22 September 2015: the main challenge is Variety. Overall, what came out of the discussions was that the special thing about big data in agriculture is its extreme variety. More info

  • Joint GEMIM Recommends Inventory of Marine and Aquatic Repositories (IMAR). The Joint IODE IAMSLIC Group of Experts on Marine Information Management recommended setting up of a global Inventory of Marine and Aquatic Repositories (IMAR). More info

  • Call for Papers: IFLA Journal special issue on Research Data Services. IFLA Journal invites papers for a special issue focused on research data services and libraries. Submission Deadline: 16 May 2016. More info

  • Insights of the Agricultural Data Interest Group (IGAD) Pre-Meeting and the RDA 6th Plenary Meeting. The IGAD pre-Meeting took place as a preparation for the sixth RDA plenary meeting (RDA6). More info

  • The role of LODE-BD for the long-term management of digital objects (DOs). The articles explains how LODE-BD can be used to enable semantic interoperability of persistent identifiers of digital objects. More info

Experiences of the Spanish Online Course about Research Data Management (October 2015)

Fernanda Peset is professor for library management and documentation sciences at the Polytecnic University of Valencia, Spain. She is involved in the digital archive E-LIS and is currently leading a project about research data management called "DATASEA"  (http://www.datasea.es).
