| skos:scopeNote | In practice, definition varies between countries, e.g. from gleaning or a one-man canoe in poor developing countries, to more than 20 m trawlers, seiners, or long-liners in developed ones. A comparative analysis of the definition of artisanal fisheries in each country shows that three criteria are the most commonly used: length, gross tonnage and fishing gears/target species. In fact, this last criterion helps the most to characterize what is not included in artisanal fisheries.
