2020 Annual AGRIS Community Online Meeting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is pleased to invite you to the 2020 Annual AGRIS Community Meeting where it will be discussed thematic and cross-cutting topics on AGRIS management, its use and other related developments, in particular in the context of research data in food and agriculture. The workshop’s objective is to enhance knowledge sharing and improve visibility and access to agricultural sciences and the technical content of agricultural research. The workshops will focus in particular on latest AGRIS developments and new partnerships.

REGISTRATION

Each day has one session - in the morning Central European Summer Time (CEST) . There are  individual registration links for each virtual session. Interested participants are encouraged to register for multiple days based on interests and needs.The full schedule of presentations and registration links for the week long virtual meeting are available below in the agenda.

The role of AGRIS in Scholarly Communication Landscape

AGRIS is home to data sets of multilingual bibliographic resources on agricultural research, including forestry, fisheries, animal sciences, nutrition, climate change, natural resources, land and water. It is a network of over 500 data providers from up to 148 countries mainly from low and middle income countries. AGROVOC multilingual thesaurus used at the backend allows records to be discoverable in other languages. AGRIS promotes local and non-English research data and outputs which are usually underrepresented in the mainstream scientific publications by making them findable and discoverable. This presentation will provide an overview on the characteristics of agricultural sciences and its publishing landscape, explain the need for a shared infrastructure to make the research data and outputs discoverable from developing countries, and introduce the role of AGRIS in enabling it in the scholarly communication environment.

Since 2019, AGRIS is also an open data set. During 2020, the FAO AGRIS team has been implementing the functionalities to facilitate the use and also a contribution to the AGRIS ODS.

Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for data discovery and integration

Data discovery and integration is one of the key elements for facilitating access to knowledge. While technology evolves and new integration methods appear, the volume of available data increases exponentially. The AGRIS team has been investing in strengthening data integration and discovery using frontier technologies: Artificial Intellegence (AI) and AGROVOC play a key role in content understanding and classification of high volume data.

Data provider dashboards: a new service to monitor and access statistics of data providers records

In 2020, one of the AGRIS goals is to provide new services to data providers. We believe that, after publishing their metadata in AGRIS, data providers must be able to access statistics on the usage of their metadata. In this way, they can see the results of their work, creating reports and disseminating statistics about their records. This webinar will introduce data provider dashboards, private areas on AGRIS including interactive reports and statistics about the number of visits to data providers' records (statistics tracked by Google Analytics).

Since 1974, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO has supported Member Countries to make their research products visible and accessible, through AGRIS, the International System for Agricultural Science and Technology, one of the world’s leading public information services in food and agriculture.  AGRIS focuses especially on scientific information produced in the Global South. 

AGRIS provides a great opportunity to increase analysis of agricultural performance and, consequently, help inform agriculture investment, innovation and policy to drive changes toward increasing sustainability in the agriculture sector. The platform provides free access to more than 12 million records about publications in up to 90 different languages. It facilitates access to referring books, journal articles, monographs, book chapters, datasets and grey literature - including unpublished scientific and technical reports, theses, dissertations and conference papers in the area of food and agriculture.

By contributing publications to AGRIS, organizations help to bridge the access gap for scientific literature and increase the flow and access of information in the domain of food and agriculture.

INFORMATION 4 INNOVATION IN FOOD AND AGRICULTURE (I4IFA)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) have joined forces to deliver a series of collaborative online classes on Information 4 Innovation in Food and Agriculture (I4IFA) on 29 June to 3 July, 2020. The virtual sessions pool expertise and experience from the two leading agricultural organizations and other partners and focusses on increasing the quality and impact of information, knowledge management and data exchange in food and agriculture research for development.

The I4IFA week-long event hosts the “3rd  meeting of AGROVOC Editors (29-30 June)”, the “2020 Annual AGRIS Community Meeting (2-3 July)”, and the SKiM workshop on “Knowledge Management and Capacity Development Best Practices: Valorization and Transfer of Research Results”. While the AGRIS and AGROVOC networks meet annually, this year FAO and ICARDA (implementer of the IFAD funded SKiM project), have combined their efforts to offer interlinked events for the entire week. This new approach will maximize learning and development of institutional capacity in knowledge management, through participatory and interdisciplinary online classes on knowledge best practices application, adaptation and scaling.
