VEST Registry. Vocabularies
All the vocabularies in the VEST Registry are classified by type and subject domain. Most of the Vocabularies are related to indexing. The purpose of indexing is to facilitate the search and finding of the content in a collection by the use of controlled/code lists, authority files or controlled subject vocabularies. The indexing ensures that the content will be found by users when they search specifically in information management systems. There are different type of vocabularies like authority files, classification systems, concept maps, controlled lists, ontologies, taxonomies or subject headings. But under the concept Vocabularies you can find as well dictionaries, encyclopedies, glossaries, lexical databases or topic trees.

Select any subject on the domains list and type of vocabulary and click Apply. If you only want to browse by type of vocabulary, select only items from the type of vocabulary list and click Apply. While if you want to retrieve all the records under one or more subjects, select only items from the list of domains and click Apply. A structured vocabulary of 12,100 English terms in the field of African studies, the African Studies Thesaurus is developed and maintained by staff at the library of the African Studies Centre Leiden. It is used for indexing and retrieving material in the library collection and is directly linked to the catalogue.
The Agriculture and Forestry Ontology (AFO) is based in the Agriforest thesaurus and maintained by the Viikki campus library, of the University of Helsinki Library. It contains 6000 concepts in four languages (English, Finnish, Swedish and Latin) .

ARABTERM is a multilingual terminology database which provides United Nations nomenclature and special terms in four of the official UN languages - Arabic, English, French and Spanish. The database is mainly intended for use by the language and editorial staff of the United Nations to ensure consistent translation of common terms and phrases used within the Organization.
APAIS is a subject index to scholarly articles in the social sciences and humanities published in Australia, and to selected periodical articles, conference papers, book and newspaper articles on Australian economic, social, political and cultural affairs. This ontology manages reference data about biological species needed for fisheries fact sheets and statistical information, among other resources. Species items are organized and maintained in the Aquatic Science and Fisheries Information System (ASFIS) and currently includes nearly 11.000 species items related to Fisheries and Aquaculture.

The Encyclopedia of Life is an ecosystem of Web sites that makes all key information about all life on Earth freely accessible. The portal contains about 25 exemplar species pages and tens of thousands of additional species pages authenticated by scientists, in addition to about 1 million minimal species pages.
The Environmental Dictionary (EnDic) is maintained by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). Since 2009 it also contains the MetDic (Meteorological Dictionary) maintaned by the Finnish meteorological institute (FMI).
It contains environmental terms in nine languages: Finnish, Estonian, English, French, German, Swedish, Lithuanian, Latvian and Russian.
The dictionary has about 90,000 search words in different languages and provides definitions for 2,000 terms in English, Estonian and Finnish. The 9,000 meteorological terms of the MetDic dictionary are given in Finnish, Swedish and English.
The Environmental Dictionary EnDic covers a wide field of environmental protection and nature conservation, including such areas as meteorology, hydrology, environmental engineering, water supply and wastewater treatment, waste management and the environmental policy of the EU.
The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors (Thesaurus) is a controlled vocabulary - a selected list of education-related words and phrases assigned to ERIC records to organize them by subject and make them easier to retrieve through a search.
The Eurovoc thesaurus is a multilingual, polythematic thesaurus focusing on the law and legislation of the European Union (EU). Eurovoc has been developed as a result of cooperation between the European Parliament, the EC Committee and the Publication Office with support from DG XIII. Eurovoc may be used especially in libraries and information centres specializing in law, legislation and politics. Within the EU, the Eurovoc thesaurus is used in the Library of the European Parliament, the Publication Office as well as other information institutions of the EU.
- 15The International standard statistical classification of aquatic animals and plants, abbreviated as ISSCAAP, is a nomenclature developed by the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
For statistical purposes, nominal catches of aquatic animals and plants, taken in inland and marine waters or derived from aquaculture, for all kinds of commercial, industrial and subsistence purposes, are presented at either species, genus or family level in approximately 1250 statistical categories called "species items"; these species are classified in 50 groups of species and 9 divisions in ISSCAAP.
This ontology manages reference data about gear types needed for the fisheries fact sheets. The type of gear installed on a vessel determines the type of fish that it can catch and therefore it is often used to determine the fleet power. The main classification of gear types is the International Standard Statistical Classification of Fishing Gear (ISSCFG).
