Meeting of TaCCIRe and AIMS on the use and integration of controlled vocabularies (AGROVOC) in DSpace Repositories

On the 15th of November the AIMS editorial team met the consortium of the Tanzanian Climate Change Information Repository (TaCCIRe) project in order to give support and recommendations on the use and integration of vocabularies in digital repositories. The TaCCIRe is a digital online collection that gives visibility to the Tanzanian research on climate change and that is free of charge and free from most copyright and licensing restrictions. Currently a TaCCIRe subject repository based on DSpace is built up.

The objective of this informal online meeting was to explain the high importance and advantages of the use of a controlled vocabulary like AGROVOC that standardizes the indexing process, supports the use of Linked Open Data and facilitates the retrieval of data. AGROVOC together with the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) thesaurus build the basis for the customized repository software AgriOcean DSpace, that integrates authority control to its repository functions. Furthermore the Ontology plug-in was presented, that allows the simultaneous search of multiple thesauri and thus facilitates the use of controlled vocabularies. After answering all questions, the AIMS editorial team invited all participants to register on the AIMS portal where full support is provided by the experts of the AIMS community.

The reunion with AIMS was part of a TaCCIRe consortium meeting from the 11th to the 16th of November that was set up by the Norwegian University of Life Science Library with people from Sokoine Agricultural University (SUA), University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Ardhi University (ARU) and Tanzania Meteorological Institute (TMA).
