The Virtual Open Access Agriculture & Aquaculture Repository (VOA3R) is a 3-year European project launched in June 2010 and funded by the European Commission under the seventh framework ICT Policy Support Program. It brings together 14 organizations from 10 European countries and 3 collaborators from external organizations. The VOA3R platform was developed and is currently available in a beta-version. It offers an innovative portal that brings together researchers, students and practitioners in agriculture, viticulture and aquaculture and related areas. This platform gathers 500,000 + open access resources from 14 repositories.

Eureka! Eureka!

The VOA3R platform provides various innovative searching options such as: Text based, Navigational, Tag cloud, Social & Author searches. The famous proclamation Eureka! comes from an ancient greek word, which means "I have found (it)". VOA3R makes searching easy!

Using the Navigational search you basically drag and drop terms into a specified area and then the results are shown immediately below. For example, if you want to search for an element say 'biomass', you drag this term to the left box and then the page reloads with related terms, like Natural Resources and Renewable Resources, which you can drag and drop to the bottom box. The page will reload with results found in the platform – specifically 151 results if you use the example above. It is that simple!

Ongoing cooperation between AGRIS and VOA3R

VOA3R is collaborating with the AGRIS repository, a global public domain database with 2.6 millions structured bibliographical records on agricultural science and technology. AGRIS benefits from VOA3R’s integrated open access services and academic orientation, to enlarge its network with new research institutions and quality content. VOA3R gains the support and sustainability that affiliation with a United Nations special agency provides.

The archives cover together agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, aquatic sciences, fisheries and nutrition. But above all they play the important role of providing access to the outputs of researchers, extensionists and policy makers. Mot only their scholarly articles but also the unique grey literature they produce, such as unpublished scientific and technical reports, theses, conference papers and government publications. 5 Questions in 5 Minutes

Ilse A. Rasmussen, administrator of Organic Eprints at the International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems (ICROFS)

1. Tell us something about yourself... what is your background and role in the organization you are working for?

I have a background of more than 20 years of research in organic farming, crop rotations and weed management. I am at present administrator of research programs at the International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems (ICROFS) and responsible for the international archive for research publications about organic farming, Organic Eprints. I coordinate the collaboration between the 20 national editors from Europe and other parts of the world, initiate improvements of the functionalities and the interface of the archive, and contribute to projects as VOA3R by offering services from Organic Eprints.

2. How did you get in contact with AIMS?

I got in contact with AIMS because a colleague told me about the AIMS newsletters. I also became more aware of AIMS through my participitation in the VOA3R project.

3. What is your opinion on AIMS?

It seems to me that AIMS contributes to the communication between people working with information standards and management in agriculture. Personally, I get a lot of information and insights, that would be difficult for me to achieve otherwise, through the AIMS newsletters and blog posts.

4. According to you, what is the most important benefit that AIMS provides to the VOA3R community?

I think that AIMS keeps the VOA3R community in contact with "the rest of world", so that we are informed about what goes on with information standards and management in other communities. At the same time, AIMS has special newsletters about VOA3R that inform about the activities in which the project is involved. In addition, some of the participants in the project are industrious bloggers within AIMS.

5. How do you think VOA3R can contribute to agricultural research for development?

The aim of VOA3R is to create a platform that offers a new possibility of searching, annotating and linking publications at the same time as being able to communicate with other researchers about the publications. If this succeeds, more information is shared more quickly and this augments the research and development.

The scope of the AIMS Newsletter is to bring under the attention of the AIMS community recent news, events and achievements in the field of agricultural information management. If you have any contribution, suggestion, or need assistance with the newsletter, please contact us at [email protected]
