BioSharing.org: Find, Discover and Learn!

(Biosharing.org at #IGAD17RDA pre-meeting, at #RDAPlenary, 4 April 2017)

Biosharing.org is a curated, informative and educational resource on inter-related data standards, databases, and policies in the life, environmental and biomedical sciences. BioSharing is also operating as a Working Group (WG) under Force11 and the Research Data Alliance (RDA). The WG recommendation "BioSharing Recommendations: data repositories, standards and policies in the life, biomedical and environmental sciences" is now out for community review.

"Science has always been about information. Now there seems to be more of it than ever. With the advent of genomics, and the rise of big data, there has been a proliferation of databases, and a concomitant explosion in data standards and formats", - BioMed CentralBlog.

BioSharing's goal is to assist researchers, developers, curators, funders, journals and librarians who lack the support and guidance to navigate and select the right standard or format for their data, and to identify the databases in which they can deposit it.

The BioSharing portal - linking databases, data standards and policies in the life, biomedical and environmental sciences (slides, presentation by Peter McQuilton for the Interest Group on Agricultural Data (IGAD), - #IGAD17RDA

BioSharing presents StandardsDatabasesPolicies, and Collections with associated metadata, allowing you to drill down into the linked data and find all necessary information helping researchers ensure the legacy of their data, making it more accessible, understandable, and ultimately, more useful.

By mapping the relationships between standards and the databases that implement them, or the policies that recommend them, BioSharing enables you to make an informed decision as to which standard or database to use or endorse.

BioSharing is also an interoperability component from the ELIXIR UK Node, contributing to the ELIXIR EXCELERATE platform for integration of data and services.

The RDA-BioSharing Registry: connecting data policies, standards & databases in life sciences WG is a joint effort with Force11 and it is led and constituted by prospective adopters as well as technical implementers, many of whom are also leading and/or actively involved in other relevant RDA Interest Groups and RDA Working Groups whose activities this WG complements and with which this WG will work closely.

The RDA-BioSharing WG has transformed the existing BioSharing registry into a searchable network of 800+ databases, 650+ data standards, and 80+ journal and funder data policies in the life, biomedical and environmental science domains:

 # FIND Recommendations (a core-set of resources that are selected or endorsed by data policies from journals, funders or other organizations).

 # DISCOVER Collections (that group together one or more types of resource (standard, database or policy) by domain, project or organisation).

 # LEARN! (BioSharing is the most comprehensive informative and educational resource of standards, databases and data policies in life, environmental and biomedical sciences, and is here to help you!)

The WG report "BioSharing Recommendations: data repositories, standards and policies in the life, biomedical and environmental sciences" is currently open for community review until 4 May 2017Please take a look and add any comments and questions you may have.

# The draft [PDF] RDA-BioSharing WG report provides a summary of the problems the WG addresses and their context, along with a description of the WG outputs
