Open Access Button and Unpaywall : an easy way to find Open Access versions of publications

Joe McArthur (Director of Open Access Button) shows how tools like Open Access Button and Unpaywall work, and how open access (OA) resources can be used in inter-library loan (ILL) systems, link resolvers and library searches. The tools are open source - free and community-owned:
- DeliverOA finds self-archived OA versions of articles and delivers them right inside your ILL workflow.
- EmbedOA provides a search bar that you could add to any of your library webpages and makes it easy for your researchers to discover OA articles before they request interlibrary loans or browse your e-resources pages. No coding is required.
- OAsheet helps to find OA alternatives for lots of articles at once. You create a spreadsheet with a list of the articles you need, email it to OA Button, and OA Button will send back your spreadsheet with a list of links to the articles they can find OA alternatives for.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Put the EmbedOA search bar on your e-resources page,
- Share DeliverOA and EmbedOA with your Interlibrary Loan teams,
- Promote and use tools like Unpaywall and Open Access Button - demonstrate them in training sessions with students and researchers, and make them visible on your website by putting logos or banners for the tools on your university search engines and websites.

* Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) provides a list of trusted, open access scholarly journals from across the world, and from different disciplines. Journal Editors are encouraged to submit their journals for evaluation, and researchers and librarians are encouraged to use this list as a valuable resource to identify journals to publish with, but also to find information from to advance further research. It is easy to see exactly which journals are from which country, from which discipline, at any time, by downloading it in Excel from the following: https://doaj.org/csv (the file is updated every 30 minutes).Use the functions in Excel to sort data/clean as you wish, and more. OpenRefine also an option to clean/manipulate data. Please encourage scholarly publication journals – especially from Africa – to consider applying for evaluation and inclusion. Editors can further explore using PKP OJS to host African journals (PKP OJS is open source software, and used by journals worldwide – code open for African developers to install and also contribute/give back to the community). It would be great to see African journals publishing and managing African research to address African problems and find African solutions, complemented by research done elsewhere in the world, and aligning with research elsewhere, in an online, open and transparent environment. PKP OJS also has a Dataverse Plugin to upload data sets in support of research articles – making the research data openly available for others to build on existing research, what African Open Science Platform (AOSP) is further promoting. All African librarians are encouraged to assist African journals to make the transition to online and open access. If the journal is already online and open access, please apply for the journal to be included in DOAJ by completing the online form. In a presentation by Jean-Claude Burgelmann on the implementation of a European Research Cloud (endorsed by EU Ministers), one of the proposed actions included researchers being reimbursed for APCs when publishing in OA journals listed in DOAJ. |
