The AgMES initiative

AgMES : The Agricultural Metadata Element Set

The AgMES initiative aims to encompass issues of semantic standards in the domain of agriculture with respect to description, resource discovery, interoperability and metadata exchange for different types of information resources.

Here are some examples of metadata sets or schemas available for description of different types of resources:

  • Document-like Information Objects (DLIOs):
Dublin Core, Agricultural Metadata Element Set (AgMES)
  • Events:
vCalendar, "ev" module for RSS, Ag-Event AP
  • Geographic and Regional Information:
Geographic information -- Metadata (ISO 19115)
  • Persons:
    Friend-of-a-friend (FOAF), vCard
  • Plant Production and Protection:
Darwin Core (1.0 and 2.0) (DwC)

AgMES acts as an umbrella under which new elements/refinements, deemed necessary, can be used for different resources (Document like Information Objects or DLIOs, projects, presentations, images, best practices, projects, etc.), in all areas relevant to food production, nutrition and rural development. Semantic elements that are established here will be well documented, regularly maintained, and made available for re-use.
