It shares many of the features commonly seen in Document Management systems, but is primarily used for institutional repositories and scientific journals. EPrints has been developed at the University of Southampton School of Electronics and Computer Science and released under a GPL license.

Fedora (or Flexible Extensible Digital Object Repository Architecture) is a modular architecture built on the principle that interoperability and extensibility is best achieved by the integration of data, interfaces, and mechanisms (i.e., executable programs) as clearly defined modules. Fedora is a digital asset management (DAM) architecture, upon which many types of digital library, institutional repositories, digital archives, and digital libraries systems might be built. Fedora is the underlying architecture for a digital repository, and is not a complete management, indexing, discovery, and delivery application.

Greenstone is a suite of software for building and distributing digital library collections. It provides a new way of organizing information and publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM. Greenstone is produced by the New Zealand Digital Library Project at the University of Waikato, and developed and distributed in cooperation with UNESCO and the Human Info NGO. It is open-source, multilingual software, issued under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

The multilingual semantic search assistant (MSSA) is a web-based tool helping users to find better information in fulltext-based or metadata-based search engines. The MSSA implements four independent functions, each associated with the AGROVOC multilingual thesaurus, to assist users in choosing better keywords: a Boolean search builder, a Topic Browser, a multilingual query builder supporting cross-language searching, a synonym expansion query builder. Currently set to access the AGRIS search portal, the MSSA is designed as a plug-in for any kind of search engine.

OntoViz is an attempt to enable the user to visually browse and navigate large and complex ontologies containing millions of terms and various relationships between them.

OWLDoc is a tool that generates JavaDoc style html page documentation for an OWL ontology. OWLDoc has been implemented so that it may be used with Protégé-OWL in order to generate documentation for OWL ontologies. OWLDoc offers various configuration options. For example it is possible to include the Abstract Syntax representation of classes, properties and individuals . OWLDoc also supports the possibility of localising the labels used in the pages it generates - different languages can be 'plugged' in.

VIVO is an open source semantic web application originally developed and implemented at Cornell. When installed and populated with researcher interests, activities, and accomplishments, it enables the discovery of research and scholarship across disciplines at that institution and beyond. VIVO supports browsing and a search function which returns faceted results for rapid retrieval of desired information. Content in any local VIVO installation may be maintained manually,  brought into VIVO in automated ways from local systems of record, such as HR, grants, course, and faculty activity databases, or from database providers such as publication aggregators and funding agencies.
