The International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) is recruiting a 'Data and Information Manager'.CIAT works to reduce hunger and poverty, and improve human nutrition in the tropics through aimed at increasing the eco-efficiency of agriculture. CIAT is a member of the CGIAR Consortium.The Center's research focuses on improving key crops (cassava, common bean, rice, and tropical forages);reversing soil and land degradation; and using information to foster better decisions about issues such as climate change and environmental management. Headquartered near Cali, Colombia, CIAT has regional offices in Nairobi, Kenya , Hanoi, Vietnam, with staff posted in other developing countries as well.

The person

CIAT believes that open access to data and information produced by our staff and partners is essential for achieving our mission and for ensuring transparency and equity in the use of our research results.The data and information manager will lead and coordinate functions related to internal and external data and information management at CIAT in collaboration with CGIAR research programs.This person will provide leadership in the implementation of CIAT's data management strategy and CGIAR's open access policy at the centre level as well as in the development and implementation of an information management strategy.The selected candidate will be responsible for harmonising, improving, and developing the Centre's data and information management activities. She/he is also expected to design, oversee, and contribute to new information management and sharing initiatives and platforms at CIAT.

The responsibilities

  • Lead implementation of the CIAT data management strategy in accordance with the CGIAR's open access policy and coordiante the necessary processes in collaboration with researchers, corporate communications, and the information technology unit.
  • Provide leadership and strategic guidance in identifying and implementing improved mechanisms for data and information management.
  • Provide project management and coordination for implementation of data and information management.
  • Interact with CIAT scientists and support staff in dealing with issues related to data access, including the production of quality data that can be archived and published via existing databases.
  • Oversee development and implementation of standards to make data and information more widely available to CIAT staff and partners.
  • Participate in major events and collaborate with external groups, organisations, and associations to improve data and information management and publishing.

The requirements 

  • A post-post graduate degree in relevant fields, such as information management or computer science.
  • 5-7 years of experience working in scientific environments.
  • Strong background in developing and implementing data standards and a good understanding of open access, open data, and knowledge management activities.
  • Familiarity with agricultural research for development, data and information management,and computer science.
  • Awareness of the developments in information technology and ability to advise project teams on latest information technology solutions.
  • Understanding of the importance of making data readily available as an international public good.
  • Commitment to sharing information and continuous improvement in a cooperative atmosphere of constructive evaluation and self-learning.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams based on excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.Ability to speak Spanish will be an advantage.

Terms of employment

The Data and Information Manager position is being recruited internationally, and will be based at CIAT headquarters in Cali, Colombia.
