This presentation focuses on the development of a national repository for the Kenya Agricultural Information Network (KAINet) and an institutional repository (IR) at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI).

AgriOcean DSpace and AgriDrupal

AgriOcean DSpace, for KAINet, and Agridrupal at KARI, are implemented as the tools of choice for the management of the repositories. KAINet repository and KARI repository include both research literature and local agricultural knowledge. The scope of content includes climate change, forestry research literature, agricultural related literature, water use, and simple brochures/leaflets. KAINet repository has more than 38,000 bibliographic records, while KARI repository has 1,500 bibliographic records with full text documents.

Still a great deal of work needs to be done to promote implementation of the repositories and populate them with full-text documents. Key challenges faced include the absence of information management technical capacity,  inadequate technical infrastructure, lack of open access awareness, understanding of the open access concepts and institutional dependence propitiatory software
