Why does ORCID matter ?

The ORCID system is an emerging, yet widely supported, mechanism for assigning and managing persistent and unambiguous personal identifiers for use in the scholarly attribution chain. Implementing ORCIDs in digital repositories is another step toward uniquely identifying and connecting researchers and authors with their contributions and affiliations. This enhances discovery of authors and content across disciplines.

ORCID : Open Researcher and Contributor ID

is a non-prorietary, non-profit community-based registry of research identifiers supported by a global community of organizational members, including research organizations, publishers, funders, professional associations, and other stakeholders in the research ecosystem.

There are currently 681 ORCID member organizations. Interested in becoming a member? Learn more about membership

Link your name and your research

ORCID automatically links authors to their datasets and other works in addition to articles.

This means that once a digital repository has a standard identifier for authors in its records, data integrators have the ability to see ORCIDs or find associated resources (i.e., when searching in repository by a researcher’s ORCID, all publications associated with that ORCID will be returned).

Registration is free, privacy-protected, and quick. Go to ORCID's registration page.

You can ask ORCID to eliminate the duplicate ID by contacting ORCID support

  • include “duplicate ID” in the subject line;
  • in the body of the message include “my primary ID is [EXISTING ID] and the duplicate is [NEW ID]”

If an ORCID has already been created for you, opt out on the ORCID site:

  • Navigate to https://orcid.org/account
  • If requested, sign in, and/or create a password
  • Click the "Close this ORCID record" information link and then the "Close this ORCID record" button
  • ORCID will send you a verification e-mail -- click on the link it contains to complete the process.

OTHER benefitS of obtaining a researcher ID through the ORCID system

  • Author disambiguation

With your ORCID ID (persistent digital identifier)  it is easier to distinguish your work from other researchers, and your work is recognized and not easily confused with work by others with the same name. (i.e. Gary White, Mary Smith). This ensures that your work is clearly attributed to you (and recognized) while being supported by the creation of a permanent, clear and unambiguous record of scholarly communication.

    Author privacy

Researcher privacy is a fundamental principle of ORCID. Researchers control the defined privacy settings of their own ORCID record data.  ORCID provides you three settings: Public, Limited or Private.
Authors can control what information in their ORCID profile they share. Only the ORCID ID is automatically shared.
    See ORCID's privacy policy.

It is easy to import research output from...

…other sources (including ResearcherID, Scopus Author ID, and Datacite Metadata Store to your ORCID profile.

You will then be given several options for searching for, importing or uploading publications to your profile.

    See ORCID's import works page.

Tracking the output of researchers at the departmental and institutional level …

…can be very work-intensive since there is not a clear way to identify researchers.  ORCID has the potential to significantly help tracking research outputs at institution, department, and college levels.
ORCID will unambiguously connect your names(s) with your work throughout your career, including your papers, data, biographical information, etc.

Funders are embedding ORCID identifies in…

…their grant submission systems. Governmental organizations, such as NIH, OSTI, and CERN are supporting this effort.
This  makes it easy for others (grant funders, other researchers etc.) to find your research output.

Associations are integrating into membership …

…renewal, publishing, and meeting registration. ORCID is supported by major professional organizations, including MLA, APA,AAAS, AGU, ACS, IEEE, AMS, and many others.

Publishers are integrating into manuscript …

…submission and author/reviewer databases. A complete list can be found here.

Most scholarly publishers accept ORCID's during manuscript submissions. If you give publishers permission to do so, they can automatically update your ORCID profile when the submitted article is published.

Many organizations and publishers integrate with ORCID including Nature Publishing Group, Elsevier, and the American Physical Society. See a complete list of integrators.

    Repositories are linking …

    …with deposition, search, and updating.

"A unique author identifier is of limited value unless the service also helps with authorship claims of scholarly works".

SUPPORT FOR ORCID IN REPOSITORY SYSTEMS:

ORCID is a community effort and community involvement is highly encouraged. By signing up for your ORCID ID, you would be an early adopter in a national program.
