The next webinar part of the Research Data Alliance Interest Group for Agricultural Data (IGAD)’s new Coffee Break initiative will take place on 22 September from 13:00 to 13:30 CEST. The webinar titled, Data innovation and semantics are crucial to the future of animal health will feature Georgina Cherry, from the Veterinary Health Innovation Engine (vHive) team at the University of Surrey. 

The Veterinary Health Innovation Engine (vHive), a research centre dedicated to the development and adoption of new digital technologies, in collaboration with Zoetis, ATC and University of Exeter, have built a customized digital platform called The Data Innovation Hub for Animal Health (DIHAH). DIHAH is a unique, global repository for different data drawn from all sectors in animal health that will facilitate mutual data and knowledge sharing between industry partners in a secure environment.

During this webinar, Georgina will introduce the DIHAH user community, more about the innovative platform, including its catalogue of open datasets and other data that can be used for research purposes under licence. Furthermore, the webinar will also explain how DIHAH is intended as a comprehensive “one-stop shop” for data in the sector. Data gathering is an ongoing process and the datasets added to the catalogue are being used to create a prototype livestock taxonomy to aid dataset discoverability on the platform. 

Also, as an extension to this, how vHive is collaborating with Livestock Data for Decisions (LD4D) and the Global Burden of Animal Diseases (GBADs) to validate automated content tagging tools created by the Bayes Centre at the University of Edinburgh and to build a livestock taxonomy to submit to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO)’s AGROVOC, the largest Linked open data set about agriculture available for public use.

Georgina Cherry is a chartered information professional who graduated from City University with a Master’s degree in Information Science in 2004. Her information management career spans higher education, financial services, and technology sectors. As part of the Veterinary Health Innovation Engine (vHive) team, Georgina has led the data governance, data gathering, and data visualisation dashboard development aspects of the Data Innovation Hub for Animal Health (DIHAH) project. DIHAH will facilitate data sharing in the animal health sector and provide the tools to enable actionable insights to be derived from combined data.

Dr Suchith Anand is Chief Scientist at the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition. He is an internationally recognised expert in geospatial science, providing guidance and advice to governments and international organisations on open education, open data  and open science policies. He has authored a wide range of publications.He has mentored over 1000 emerging leaders in sustainable development programs and initiatives worldwide through GeoForAll. He co-founded GeoForAll with a vision to make geospatial education and digital economy opportunities accessible to all, enabling a better future for everyone.

The new IGAD Coffee Break webinar series, which will feature eight different webinars from eight different presenters running from 16 June to 27 October 2021. The innovative initiative will help to create an ongoing dialogue and encourage the exchange of experiences on agricultural research and innovation within the IGAD community and beyond.
