There is an important ongoing academic protest against Elsevier, the largest publisher in the world, that is finding wide acceptance (more than 2,500 researchers have already signed).

The protest started by Tim Gowers, American mathematician awarded with a Fields Medal in 1998, on his blogwhere he said that Elsevier's policies are unsustainable for the following reasons:

1. The publisher claims payment of quotas too high;
2. The modus operandi of the publisher is not sustainable for libraries, which must buy a large set with many unwanted journals, or none at all; and
3. The editor supports policy initiatives contrary to the spirit of open access, such as the Research Works Act and supports SOPA and PIPA, making itself a promoter.
