02/07/2020

As part of the 2020 Annual AGRIS Community Online Meetingorganized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Ilkay Holt, FAO, presented a webinar on 2 July 2020.

The webinar focused on 'The role of AGRIS in Scholarly Communication Landscape.' AGRIS is home to data sets of multilingual bibliographic resources on agricultural research, including forestry, fisheries, animal sciences, nutrition, climate change, natural resources, land and water. It is a network of over 500 data providers from up to 148 countries mainly from low and middle income countries. AGROVOC multilingual thesaurus used at the backend allows records to be discoverable in other languages. AGRIS promotes local and non-English research data and outputs which are usually underrepresented in the mainstream scientific publications by making them findable and discoverable. This presentation provides an overview on the characteristics of agricultural sciences and its publishing landscape, explains the need for a shared infrastructure to make the research data and outputs discoverable from developing countries, and introduces the role of AGRIS in enabling it in the scholarly communication environment.
