AgEcon Search is a disciplinary respository started in 1995 and is co-sponsored by the University of  Minesota Department of Applied Economics, University of Minnesota Libraries, and the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA). AgEcon Search covers the field of agricultural economics and also includes, agriculture, development, energy, environmental issues and resource economics.

AgEcon Search runs on DSpace and is registered with OpenDOAR and ROAR repositories registries. The Ranking Web of World Repositories, which measures global visibility of repositories placed AgEcon Search in number 20 in the world. The repository includes materials from more than 170 organisations in 35 countries ; although the interface is in english 10 different languages are represented in the repository contents.

Repository features

The repository allows for browsing and searching of contents.There are more than 50 journals contributing content to AgEcon Search and have collections in the repository. Some examples include, Western Journal of Agricultural Economics (1977-2011), Agricultural Economics Research Review (2005-2012) and The Journal of AGRIS online papers in Economics and Informatics (2009-2011). Statistics can be generated at collection level.

AgEcon Search has more than 50,000 documents and weekly email updates are sent to a mailing list. The repository is OAI-PMH compliant and feeds agricultural economics content to the Agriculture Network Information Centre (AgNIC). AgEcon Search repository policies relating to access, content submission, licensing and preservation are available.

Increasing content submission.

AgEcon Search collects working papers, journal articles, book chapters, books, thesis, dissertations, reports, and conference papers or other documents . These documents are submitted by contributing organisations, such as academic departments, research institutes and professional associations. This is an example of good relationship between repository managers and academic units collaborating to support open access.

AgEcon receives submissions from units in the University of Minesotta Department of Applied Economics and other institutes, who have mantained a culture to deposit pre-prints. The repository also collects from professional associations, for example the American Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAAEA), ‘requires presenters at its annual meeting to post their papers on AgEcon Search two months before the meeting’.
