CABI merges with SciDev.Net
CABI (the Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International) and SciDev.Net have agreed to merge, creating a stronger and more diverse combined organisation to help boost their shared mission to improve lives around the world.
CABI is an intergovernmental, not-for-profit organisation that improves people’s lives worldwide by providing information and applying scientific expertise to solve problems in agriculture and the environment. It was established by a United Nations treaty-level agreement. CABI's 48 member countries guide and influence its work, which is delivered by scientific staff based in its global network of centres.
SciDev.Net is the world’s leading source of reliable and authoritative news, views and analysis about science and technology for global development. It produces news and feature articles, opinion pieces, multimedia packages, and data visualisations in English, French, Arabic and Spanish. Its specialist journalists based in hubs in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia generate articles shared by over 60 outlets and reaching 20 million readers every quarter.
“We are delighted to have joined with SciDev.Net, and at the smooth merging of our two organisations. It will help further boost our shared track records of impact in providing information, advice and expertise to improve sustainable development,” said Dr Trevor Nicholls, CEO, CABI
The two organisations are already working closely together, based on their shared values and overlapping audiences. The merger will strengthen SciDev.Net’s operations and support its objectives. The reach of its five regional editions supports CABI’s mission of putting information about agriculture and the environment into the hands of those who need it most.
Both organisations believe the merger will lead to innovations in the way research is published and shared, and will contribute to better development communications and extension.
SciDev.Net, a journalism charity, receives support from bilateral, multilateral and philanthropic donors including the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, UNESCO and the São Paulo Research Foundation. Under the terms of the merger, agreed after consultation with donors and the Charity Commission, CABI guarantees that SciDev.Net will retain its own identity and editorial independence.
