The Role

We are looking for a suitably experienced individual to join our Digital Archives & Repositories Team. You will be responsible for assisting our Senior Repositories Specialist in the technical development and maintenance of our repository service, liaising with external and internal customers and with our network and hosting services team.



This is a new post, for 18 months in the first instance. The role is predominantly a technical one and requires a experience of implementing and supporting institutional repositories, and a good understanding of related issues such as digital preservation, linked data and research information management.



In addition to managing the requirements of existing customers we expect you to contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of the service infrastructure. We also actively encourage participation in innovative project opportunities, often in participation with other institutions.

Requirements

You will have experience of providing repository services within an academic or similar environment. You will be familiar with configuration and customisation of repository software to meet the needs of users in libraries and/or archives.



You will have a good understanding of current Web and database applications generally and their use in the HE and related sectors. Our preferred platform is EPrints therefore the ability to work with Perl and XML is essential; familiarity with other languages is also desirable. Technologies and standards you are likely to have been exposed to include OAI-PMH, RSS/Atom, SWORD, RDF, JSON, Web services. You will be aware of key themes in the sector such as Open Access, Open Educational Resources, Linked Data, Social Networking.



To succeed in this role, you will need the ability to understand and adapt to new ways of using technology and have the ability to assess operations, with a view to streamlining processes and creating efficiencies, and be able to communicate technical proposals and plans to both technical and non-technical people. Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills are required and you will demonstrate a co-operative approach to working in and with teams.

About The Department

Established in 1968, University of London Computer Centre (ULCC) has evolved into a highly respected organisation providing IT services not only to the University of London central departments, but also to the wider academic and not-for-profit sector. Services provided include: co-location and managed server hosting, e-learning, e-repositories, desktop support, digital preservation and managed network services.



ULCC Digital Archives & Repositories has been providing library and archiving solutions in the education and cultural sectors for over 15 years. Organisations we have worked with include The National Archives, the British Library and the Parliamentary Archives, as well as most of the colleges and institutes of the University of London.



Since 2005, the Repositories team has developed, hosted and supported over a dozen repository systems, ranging from institutional repositories for University of London institutions to special collections repositories, such as Linnean Online.



We have also contributed to many JISC information environment projects, developing repository solutions for social networking, text-mining and mobile platforms, as well as systems such as online catalogues for the AIM25 consortium and the award-winning Transcribe Bentham site. We participate actively in the digital preservation and repositories communities nationally and internationally, and in 2010 we won the Open Repositories Developer Challenge.
