Focus on the Open Data for Development project in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Open Data for Development (OD4D) is a project that seeks to raise the awareness and the importance of Open Data, as well as supporting its use by public enterprises in the economies of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. This will be done through producing knowledge on Open Data strategies that leads to accountability, innovative services and effective public policies.
Project Partners
This project is led by the W3C Brazil and the European Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The International Development and Research Center of Canada (IDRC)are the sponsors of this project which is carried out within the scope of Observatory for the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean (OSILAC).
Project Activities
The Open Data for Development activities are intended to deliver outcomes in three core areas of; transparency,new services and equitable development. Some of the key specific activities include:-
- To provide methodological and technical documentation to support data opening in different government levels.
- To support research networks in Latin America and the Caribbean in producing new information and creating innovative applications and services based on open data.
- To raise awareness among the community of public policy makers, public servants and researches of the potential of Open Data and appropriate strategies for its successful implementation.
- To assess the potential of Open Data strategies in the design and implementation of public policies aimed at promoting economic development and social inclusion in Latin American countries and in the Caribbean.
