IOOS Vocabulary Management and Development

18/10/2012

The presentation IOOS Vocabulary Management and Development delivered at the 2012 Annual Data Management and Communications Workshop (DMAC) reviews the work done by the Integrated Ocean Observing System's (IOOS) Regional Associations and centers in building controlled vocabularies, mapping and developing ontology strategies for observed properties.

Presentation highlights

The existence and use of different data naming conventions (also known as the problem of diversity in data naming) by the existing regional and subregional coastal ocean observing systems motivated this work and as a remedy, the following set of strategies are described in the presentation;-

  • The use of the IOOS Parameter Vocabulary v2.0 , the CF Standard Name Table v19 ,and the proposed 'IOOS Vocabulary Term Identification decision tree' with the objective to provide consistency in labeling ocean variables in standard data services
  • Term mapping tool provided by the MMI Ontology Registry and Repository (ORR) to reduce ambiguity inherent in human language when the same concept has two different names)
  • The MMI Ontology Registry and Repository has a simple query interface based on SPARQL to promote the discovery of terms and concepts in multiple domains and disciplines)
