‘Mendeley and Open Data’ presentation at the Rigour and Openness in 21st Century Science event held.
05/06/2013
In a presentation entitled, ‘Mendeley and Open Data', Victor Henning, the CEO of Mendeley, summarises the evolution of Mendeley - when it started, how it grew and what are the goals of it joining Elsevier.
Mendely was launched as a simple reference management and PDF organiser platform to help researchers organise their papers and also bibliographic citations. However, Mendeley has grown to be an aggregator of research documents and data. This goal was an inspiration fuelled by Tim Berners Lee’s challenge to unlock scientist’s information.
The presentations’ highlights:-
- Mendeley extracts research data and aggregates research data in the cloud.
- Has a global research community with 2,3 million users , of whom 1,500 are advisers –whose function are to establish local communities around campus boards.
- 300 active third party Apps built on the Mendeley API,
- Sharing Mendeley readership statistics with ‘altemetrics’ tools.
