UNESCO launches Open Access repository based on Creative Commons 3.0 Intergovernmental Organisation License

17/12/2013

UNESCO launched its new Open Access Repository, making its publications freely available and providing "the public with an insight into the work of the Organization so that everyone is able to discover and share what UNESCO is doing." (An open door to UNESCO's knowledge)

The Repository contains more than 300 books, reports, and articles in 12 languages, including major UNESCO reports and key research publications. Hundreds of other reports and titles will be made available in the near future.

New open licensing system for intergovernmental agencies

The news is also that the repository is based on a new open licensing system developed by the Creative Commons organization specifically for intergovernmental agencies, known as the "Creative Commons 3.0 Intergovernmental Organisation (IGO) License".

The new licensing tool was developed by the World Intellectual Property Organization with the support of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, in collaboration with several other international organisations, including FAO.

"The licenses make it easier for IGOs to widely distribute their studies, reports, data sets and other material online. Once applied, the licenses give the public permission to republish that content, as long as they follow a few simple rules." (WIPO)
