Structural change of AGROVOC
The AGROVOC Thesaurus is currently under a profound revision aimed to make it more coherent, consistent, and more meaningful. The revision is being done in partnership with ICRISAT, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, based in Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh, India, and coordinated by FAO staff. The main objective of this manual revision by experts is the conversion of AGROVOC from a traditional term-based system into a sematically structured system, called Concept Server. This requires a complete restructuring of term hierarchies, the checking and adjustment of current non-descriptors which frequently refer to new specific descriptors, and the restructuring of scientific/taxonomic and common names that are currently part of AGROVOC. In order to specify current relationships among terms/concepts, refined semantic relationships have to be added, such as "hasPest", "isChemicalFormulaOf", "hasIngredient", "hasAcronym", "isMemberOf", etc. The hierarchical structure of these "ontological" relationships will permit the reconstruction of AGROVOC without affecting the usage of a traditional thesaurus.
