EMPRES : Global Animal Disease Information System

EMPRES Global Animal Disease Information System (EMPRES-i) is a web-based application that has been designed by FAO’s Emergency Prevention System (EMPRES) to support veterinary services by facilitating the organization and access to national, regional and global level disease data and information.

Since 2004 the FAO of the UN has been at the forefront of the fight against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) – bird flu – in over 95 countries. FAO has mobilized over US$ 445 million to combat influenza and emerging disease threats through prevention, surveillance, and control (FAO and emergencies).

To address the challenge, in 2004 FAO’s Emergency Prevention System (EMPRES) designed and developed a web-based secure information system to support country level veterinary services by facilitating regional and global disease information: EMPRES Global Animal Disease Information System (EMPRES-i). Today EMPRES-i has become a global reference database for animal diseases including zoonosis. (FAO to prevent threats to the food chain).

With EMPRES-i you will be able to develop strategies for prevention of animal diseases, as well those for progressive control and improved management of veterinary services.

EMPERES-i team receives information about disease events worldwide from different sources: country or regional project reports, field mission reports, partner Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), cooperating institutions, government Ministries of Agriculture and Health, FAO in-country representations or other United Nations parties, public domains, the media and web-based health surveillance systems.

EMPRES-i also integrates data from other databases, i.e. livestock density or environmental layers from FAO databases, e.g,  the Global Livestock Production and Health Atlas, GLiPHA (user-friendly, highly interactive electronic atlas using the Key Indicator Data System (KIDS) and from other systems.

The EMPRES-i genetic module is a novel tool that aims to facilitate the analysis and better understanding of influenza viruses by linking epidemiological outbreak data, including and genetic characteristics of influenza, (e.g., virus clades, antiviral resistance markers, mammalian adaptation markers, and reassortment to the epidemiological information) to detailed epidemiological disease event records.

The EMPRES-i genetic module therefore offers combined epidemiological information curated in EMPRES-i and genetic information curated in OpenFluDB database (managed by the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics).

EMPRES-i provides up to date information on the global animal disease distribution and current threats at national, regional and global level. 'Disease Events' can be presented on a map and further analyzed by choosing from a variety of optional layers.

Access and export the genetic information of an influenza disease event:

I.

Access the EMPRES-i platform and click on Disease Event.

II.

Select Advanced Search that  leads to several search criteria.

III.

Select your Search Options: you may specify conditions such as disease, location, event date, animals affected, and the genetic link status.

IV.

After entering search criteria, select FIND button on the left bottom side.

V.

A list of disease events according to the criteria specified will be displayed in a new window. You can click on each record to view more details about each event.

VI.

Convert and export the information in the disease events list into PDF or CSV files.

EMPRES-i is an open source database and has for the time being a limited number of linkages (circa 30% of the total number of H5N1 disease events). Users are welcome to suggest linkages and linkage changes by submitting their suggestions to administrators of the EMPRES-i genetic module.

Users who have created an EMPRES-i account (by entering EMPRES-i and clicking on My EMPRES-i button) will have the option of clicking the ‘Suggestions’ tab while viewing a specific disease event record.

For more complete guidance on the use of EMPRES-i, please consult the User Manual.

EMPRES-i also provides access to:

DIRECTORY

contact details of the Chief Veterinary Officers (CVOs) for each country.

LABORATORIES

contact information of FAO/OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) reference laboratories and Regional  laboratory networks.

LIBRARY

access to FAO technical publications such as bulletins, journals, reports, documents and other publications.

If you have any questions or suggestions on how to improve the EMPRES-i platform and the information provided or would like to share information with EMPRES please send your message to [email protected]
