TWAS : For the advancement of Science in Developing Countries

TWAIS is a global science academy based in Trieste, Italy, working to advance science for sustainable prosperity in the developing world. TWAS is one of four front-line world science organizations taking part in the Science International initiative (the first one was Open Data in a Big Data World, TWAS, 2016).

On 25 January, 2017, TWAS has opened calls for prize nominations, research grants, PhD fellowships and other valuable opportunities for scientists in the developing world.

Trieste hosts more than 30 national and international centers and companies dedicated to research and higher education. As a dynamic 'capital of research', Trieste focuses on sustainable growth and development, with impact that extends beyond Italy to the rest of Europe and the developing world. Every year, thousands of scientists from around the world come through Trieste for research or conferences, or they benefit from programmes that are organized here.

TWAS - The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries - is one of the important UN nucleous in Italy. Legally, TWAS is a programme unit within UNESCO

For more than 30 years of its activity, TWAS has had a tremendous impact in countries in the South of the world. Many of researchers come to TWAS from developing nations, where often there are few career-support opportunities.

“Developing nations, by building strength in science and engineering, could build the knowledge and skill to address such challenges as hunger, disease and poverty” (About TWAS).

TWAS and its partners offer over 600 fellowships per year to scientists in the developing world who want to pursue PhDs and postdoctoral research. TWAS prizes and awards are among the most prestigious given for scientific work in the developing world.

To help organize activities and disseminate information, TWAS has established five Regional Offices. They are located in Alexandria, Egypt; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Beijing, China; Pretoria, South Africa; and Bangalore, India.

TWAS hosts and works in close association with two other organizations on the ICTP campus:

  • The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) with 4,800 members;
  • The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) that brings together three renowned global networks of academies of science and medicine, representing some 130 academies worldwide. Two of these networks, 'IAP for Science' (formerly IAP - the global network of science academies) and 'IAP for Health' (formerly the InterAcademy Medical Panel) are hosted by TWAS in Trieste.

Moreover, TWAS is one of four front-line world science organizations taking part in the Science International initiative, alongside the IAP; International Council for Science (ICSU); and the International Social Science Council (ISSC).

Science International is a series of regular meetings aiming to achieve a significant impact on key science policy challenges. The first Science International initiative Open Data in a Big Data World took place in TWAS, on 23 September 2016, Trieste, Italy. Two experts, Leonida Mutuku from Africa and Claudio Sartori from Italy, have presented the state of the art of big data, with a focus on the growing "digital divide" between poor and affluent nations (learn more: TWAS - Big-Data).
