A free e-learning programme on open data - developed as part of the capacity development activities within the GODAN Action project -  is going to help strengthen the capacity of data producers and data consumers to manage and use open data in agriculture and nutrition. The upcoming e-course “Open Data and Research Data Management in Agriculture and Nutrition” - soon available through Moodle for free - focuses on how to deal with different types of data formats and uses, and on the importance of reliability, accessibility, interoperability and transparency of data. Skills and knowledge obtained in this course are to be used in the context of different institutions in agricultural and nutrition knowledge networks.

# From IDEA to ACTION

The design of the upcoming e-course was discussed during a consultative workshop entitled “Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition” held at the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) in Wageningen on the 7th-8th of March 2017. This event brought together experts and representatives of the target audience, including representatives from national organizations and networks in developing countries to define the curriculum outline as a first step in the development of an e-learning course.

# This course addresses

• Infomediaries (including ICT workers, technologist-journalists, communication officers, librarians and extensionists) - interested in open data and research data management (in agriculture and nutrition);  

• Researchers - engaged in producing and curating datasets that underlie research publications, identifying datasets suitable for reuse in research as well as in communicating societal benefits of research results;

• Policy and decision makers - involved in formulating policies and reports using open data, and in developing strategies for sustainable open data plans.

# Course Structure

The course covers key knowledge and concepts needed by the target audience groups, as well as provide task-based and vocational training to support information and data professionals in their daily activities.

The course is modular, and split into five units (comprising a series of e-learning lessons):

1. Open data principles,

2. Using open data,

3. Making the data open,

4. Interoperability,

5. Intellectual property.

The  engaging e-learning programme will be learner-centered and enriched with number of webinars which will be open to the public as well as course participants.
