China's development of CIARD and RING for Agricultural Research Information

Recently the CIARD Movement has published online a series of case studies that describe the processes and experiences in the implementation of agricultural research information systems. The papers are about 30 pages each, and are very easy to read.

From AIMS we will highlight each of them, starting with the case study that describes the implementation of China’s development of CIARD and a RING for agricultural research information. Agricultural information systems in China include those of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), the Chinese Academy of Forestry Sciences, The Chinese Academy  of  Fishery  Sciences, 30 Provincial  Academies  of  Agricultural  Sciences, Forestry Sciences and Fishery Sciences, and 60 University Libraries and Information services.

Some of the key experiences are the following:

  • advocacy and promotion as key elements to get the commitment of senior policy makers and managers in CAAS;
  • establishment of CIARD Working Group in China;
  • translation of the CIARD website, documents and the registration process for the CIARD RING from English to Chinese, a difficult area as clear definitions of many technical terms are not available in Chienese together with limited resources especially for generating the needed advanced information in the Chinese language;
  • 100 organizations registered in CIARD and the CIARD RING, as a consequence the current CIARD working group is overwhelmed. Therefore the paper highlights the fact that is necessary to develop a National CIARD Center that manages all CIARD related activities and further developments and aldo coordinates the RING at the National level, along with the Provincial CIARD Centers.
