Interest Group “Controlled Vocabularies for Repository Assets”

COAR has established an interest group for 'Controlled Vocabularies for Repository Assets'.This is second after another related working group called 'Repository Interoperability'.The specific objectives of the 'Controlled Vocabularies for Repository Assets' are detailed below and also the first kick-off meeting was held on 14 January 2014.

Objectives (As published by COAR)

One of the values of repositories is their ability to mutually exchange information on scholarly publications and research data with other repositories and with other types of infrastructure, e.g. academic search engines.Guidelines about the use of metadata and transfer protocols describe the syntactic aspects to create interoperability between different services. These guidelines are complemented by controlled vocabularies that standardize specific properties of publications and data, such as publication type and version, project identifier, access level and license.

A controlled vocabulary (info:eu-repo) was developed by the DRIVER and OpenAIRE initiatives for European repositories and has been widely used in the repository landscape in Europe and beyond . The Interest Group will be the new maintainer of the vocabulary and widen its applicability for global use. It will be hosted at COAR and made publicly available as a resource for the global repository community. It will be ensured for an international governance structure and an established workflow for maintaining the vocabulary that will enable it to be used by interested parties.

Moreover this Interest Group will provide an overview of related controlled vocabularies and open access indicators used in international and regional guidelines that are targeted at repositories. Using this review will allow to update and align controlled vocabulary for repositories at COAR.

The interest group is led by Jochen Schirrwagen.
