Focus on the Open Knowledge Repository initiative

The Open Knowledge Repository (OKR) is The World Bank’s official open access repository for its research outputs and knowledge products. Through the OKR, The World Bank collects, disseminates, and permanently preserves its intellectual output in digital form. The OKR is used by governments and civil society organizations (CSOs), students and the general public. The OKR is built using DSpace version 3.1 (an upgrade to version 5.1 is planned before the end of the year) and supports discoverability and re-usability of its content by complying with the DCMI standards and its metadata is exposed through the OAI-PMH protocol. The repository is hosted in the Cloud and is developed in partnership with Atmire.

Open Knowledge Repository Features

The OKR incorporates all the standard navigational approaches and functional elements inherent in the DSpace platform. In addition, the OKR incorporates several additional key features and enhancements that enrich the site. These include:

  • Over 18,000 publications offered under Creative Commons IGO Attribution license (CC BY IGO), a license specifically adapted for use by International Governmental Organizations.
  • A Responsive User Interface that automatically reformats to the users device, whether a PC, a tablet or a smart phone.
  • Publicly-available usage statistics allowing anyone to see in real-time the most popular publications, downloads by country, and most popular authors.
  • “Virtual Sets” of custom OAI metadata feeds enabling third party repositories to request specific OAI metadata outputs of OKR content. This enhancement allows the OKR to extend the OAI functionality beyond feeds of the whole repository or by collection to feeds that can be configured by topic, region, country, etc.
  • Author profiles collecting in one central location biographical and personal information, a listing of the author’s publications, usage statistics and citations. Author profiles provide a quick snapshot of the author’s contribution to the development literature during his or her time at the World Bank.
  • Integration with Altmetrics providing information on social media buzz around a particular book
  • Citation information for each work–including a permanent URI –which allows users to properly cite and link back to all World Bank works used in their research.
  • Links to citations on Google Scholar and Scopus providing information on where and when OKR content has been cited.
  • Links to microdata sets for selected publications (currently to 100+ publications) allowing users to access the underlying datasets used to produce the paper on the Bank's MicroData catalog
  • Title recommendations based on user downloads of related titles (i.e., ala Amazon "users that downloaded this publications also downloaded...")

  • AGRIS e-consultation survey results. This brief report summarizes the results of the AGRIS e – consultation survey that took place from November 2014 to February, 12nd 2015. The report focuses on feedback received in the following subgroups:- demographics, needs of users, existing services and new suggestions from users. Read More
  • New AGORA online course coming in May 2015. The AGORA team announced the new AGORA online course on moodle. The primary goal of the course is to explain how AGORA works targeting institutions registered with AGORA. Read More.
  • Role of Communities of Practice in Opening up of Data for Agriculture and Nutrition. The abstract details the role of communities in Agriculture and Nutrition, this is an abstract for a conference session to be presented on the 28th to 29th of May in Ottawa. Read More
  • AGROVOC Survey 2015. The AGROVOC team launched on the 20th of April a survey to get feedback from its users; the survey is available also in Chinese. Read More
  • Linked Data and the Charm of Weak Semantics -- ASIST Bulletin Special Issue. AIMS community could find the Special Bulletin of the ASIS&T Bulletin April/May 2-15 on "Linked Data and the Charm of Weak Semantics" interesting as it covers various aspects of information management. Read More
  • ORCID Receives $3 Million Grant to expand International Capacity. ORCID  announced that it received $3 Million grant from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to develop the infrastructure and capacity to support international adoption and technical integration of ORCID. Read More
  • A new AGROVOC latest release. The latest release of AGROVOC March 2015 with new features was announced, for example new terms have been added and the Agrontology has also been revised. Read More
  • CAB Direct reaches 11 million record milestone. On 26 March 2015, global academic publisher, CABI, announced its bibliographic platform CAB Direct has reached the milestone of 11 million records. CABI’s in-house platform, CAB Direct, hosts CAB Abstracts the leading English language bibliographic database covering the applied life sciences. Read More

Glossary

What is Class? A class, in general, is a representation of a concept. It is an abstract representation of some specific classification of things (hence the name class). The name used to identify a class is the perceptual symbol or word used to denote a concept. In an ontology, a class is more specifically a formal definition of a type of information object that may possess a given set of attributes or properties and specific types of relations to other things.

José De Buerba is the Senior Publishing Officer and Head of Marketing at World Bank Group Publications. José manages a team responsible for maximizing the dissemination of Bank publications, administering the Bank’s copyright, ensuring compliance with the Bank’s Open Access policy, and developing and maintaining the Open Knowledge Repository (OKR), the Bank’s official Open Access repository.
