| skos:scopeNote | Cell-based food production involves using cells isolated from animals, plants or microorganisms to produce food products, ingredients or additives. Often times the products can be seen as comparable to the existing animal products, such as meat, poultry, aquatic products, dairy products and eggs. Disclaimer: At present, there is no internationally harmonized definition nor an officially agreed distinction between the terms âcell-based food productionâ and âcellular agricultureâ. These expressions are often used interchangeably across different sources; however, their scope and conceptual boundaries remain subject to interpretation. FAO has not been mandated by its Members to establish consensus in this area, and therefore cannot prescribe a definitive usage. Any terminology presented under these two concepts (âcell-based food productionâ and âcellular agricultureâ) is offered solely for descriptive and informational purposes, with cross-references provided to acknowledge the overlap and ongoing evolution of this nomenclature.
