(BoF) Group on Metrics and Indicators in Agricultural Sciences

is part of RDA (Research Data Alliance) IGAD (Interest Group in Agricultural Data).

The Group became alive on 26th April 2017 with the aim to continue the discussion and prepare a White Paper* on responsible use of indicators in agricultural sciences.

The work of the Group will be built on earlier work of experts on science and technology indicators such as the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and the Leiden Manifesto for Research Metrics.

The Group studies existing indicators, criticizes assessments and the decisions made based on these indicators, and particularly questions societal impact of research in agricultural domain.

The Group is open to anyone interested in this area and it is possible to Join the Group’s Mailing List

Your participation in the Group’s brief SURVEY will help get a general idea how metrics and other indicators are used in the agricultural sciences. Following up the Survey results, the Group will be developing the content of the White Paper in collaboration with the active members.

In its discussions, the Group has found that most of the considerations about metrics and indicators are generic and applicable in different fields, including the agricultural context.

To reflect these considerations, an outline has been drafted for the White Paper. In this draft there are many caveats about questionable use of indicators. The Group is going to share also good practices and experiences of methods that work well. To this end, the Group expects its members and any other relevant persons or groups to provide their feedback on the outline.

The White Paper is planned to be delivered by the end of 2017.
