What is your relationship with agricultural information management standards, tools and services?
Armando Stellato, PhD, is Researcher at the University of Rome, Tor Vergata, where he researches and teaches in the fields of Knowledge Representation and Knowledge Based Systems. He is author of almost 80 publications on conferences and journals in the fields of Semantic Web, Natural Language Processing and related areas and has been member of the program committees of over 50 international scientific conferences and workshops. Currently his main interests cover Architecture Design for Knowledge Based Systems, Knowledge Elicitation (for which he benefits from the long tradition in NLP of his research group), and Onto-Linguistic interfaces. He has been scientific and technical consultant for the fields of Knowledge Engineering, Knowledge-based Systems and Knowledge Elicitation at ESE Engineering (Italy), and has been involved in a framework research agreement between Roma Tor Vergata and the European Space Agency. He is also been consultant at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations as a Semantic Architect, working 360° on all aspects (vocabulary design, publication on Linked Open Data, evolution of FAO software for collaborative RDF management) related to maintenance and publication of FAO RDF vocabularies such as AGROVOC, Biotech and Journal Authority Data. He is currently leading the VocBench project: a joint effort between University of Tor Vergata and FAO for a open-source collaborative web platform for editing thesauri and concept schemes. In his career he has participated to several EU funded projects, such as Crossmarc, Moses, Cuspis, Diligent, Neon, INSEARCH, SCIDIP-ES, SemaGrow as well as to collaborations with national organizations like APAT (Ambient and Territory Protection Agency) and FILAS, both as a researcher and as a software designer and developer. During these participations he has designed and developed several systems act in the Semantic Web area, like the OntoLing Protégé plugin, which is the reference tool for enriching ontologies with content from linguistic resources in the Protégé environment, and Semantic Turkey, a “Semantic Bookmarking” framework, which combines capabilities for semantic annotation and ontology editing into high level functionalities for extracting and composing semantic knowledge from traditional web content, and CODA (Computer-aided Ontology Development Architecture), a framework for the automation of Knowledge Acquisition and Synthesis processes. Armando Stellato is currently actively participating in the W3C Ontology-Lexica Community Group, with the objective of developing models for the representation of lexica (and machine readable dictionaries) in RDF, and for their linking to ontologies.
