1. Introduction

The AgMES (Agricultural Metadata Element set) initiative aims to encompass issues of semantic standards in the domain of agriculture with respect to description, resource discovery, interoperability and data exchange for different types of information resources. The AgMES metadata terms can be defined for newly declared elements that are deemed necessary and are used for different resources (bibliographic references or DLIOs, projects, images, technologies, practices, maps etc.) in all areas relevant to food production, nutrition and rural development.

This document refers to metadata elements suitable for describing information objects such as websites, documents, pictures, databases etc. In the description of such resources, the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) is widely re-used and as an example of a format that supports a variety of purposes and business models. Essentially in the context of agricultural resources, it was discovered that the properties and sub-properties proposed and maintained by DCMI did not suffice. In light of these additional requirements, AgMES created new properties and encoding schemes that constitute a namespace.

This element set is maintained by FAO at a stable location and identifies a reference point where elements are defined and are maintained to be used by different applications. The underlying RDF schema describing all the properties and schemes of the AgMES resources is accessible at http://purl.org/agmes/1.1/
