A review of the Webinar 'The features and updates of Fedora 3.6'

The webinar entitled ‘the features and updates of Fedora 3.6’ presented by Edwin Shin, at ‘the DuraSpace Community Webinar Series’ is now available. This webinar presentation talks about the recent developments to FedoraCommons and further gives a foreglimpse of the future updates to the software.

Webinar overview

This presentation reviewed the current work being done on FedoraCommons and the expected features on the new release (3.6.2), of which the cold release is expected early November 2012.

The following features are discussed in the webinar:- 

  • Updated Web Services framework, - replaces the Axis 1.3 library to Apache CXF .This allows Fedora to support MTOM, spring configuration and REST support.
  • Expanded Spring-based configuration, has been expanded to include the Server module, SOAP and REST APIs.
  • Support for low level storage metadata, allowing implementations to pass such metadata as mime type or collection membership to be passed to the low-level storage module.
  • Support for upstream authentication. Fedora includes a new upstream servlet filter which allows for integration with external authentication systems.

This talk hinted on the upcoming FedoraCommons 3.7 release which is expected to ease long term maintenance and will,

  • remove "legacy" code or modules that are not going to be maintained
  • provide OpenJDK 7 support
  • support Servlet 3.
  • facilitate the replacement for web admin/swing admin
