The underlying goal of the AIMS community is to promote and disseminate information on Data-, Information-, Knowledge management theory and practice, and to seek to encourage exchanges between them on good practice, based on first-hand experience in the field.

Through its multi-layered awareness-raising actions (focused basically on Open Data & Science, and Research Data Management), AIMS actively encourages (agricultural, research) communities to practice their data openly, ethically, and according to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable data) principles.

Furthermore, AIMS co-chairs the RDA Interest Group on Agricultural Data  (IGAD) and is part of the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) global partnership advocating for food security.

Additionally, AIMS collaborates with the e-Agriculture Community of Practice, to facilitate the exchange of information on initiatives deploying ICT in agriculture, to help achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
