DEAR AIMS READERS !
This special AIMS e-newsletter focuses on upcomig e-learning activities from AIMS community of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN). There will be plenty of activities before the end of the year for researchers, infomediaries and practitioners in the field.
Additionally, this newsletter highlights several: (1) blog entries on the AIMS portal; (2) good practices in Data Management; (3) upcoming events focused on Research Data Management and Semantics; (4) e-learning initiatives and recorded webinars sharing knowledge about Information & Data Access services, as well as (5) a bibliography with some references for published open access journal articles and other works on a number of Information & Data Management issues. PREAMBLE : "We believe Open Knowledge can empower everyone, enabling people to work together to tackle local and global challenges, understand our world, expose inefficiency, challenge inequality and hold governments and companies to account", - Open Knowledge International.
The "good news is that open education is increasing access, lowering costs and improving student learning ... The key to this ... education opportunity is Open Educational Resources (OER), freely available materials that can be legally downloaded, edited and shared to better serve all students", - Sharing legally and freely for better learning, UNESCO.
Focus on the E-Learning Activities from AIMS
AIMS is particularly interested in promoting capacity development activities in agricultural sciences to enable and engage people in having access to scientific information. The last quarter of 2017 will offer a number of e-learning opportunities to researchers, practitioners, policy makers, librarians, IT specialists, journalists and even students to become better producers and users of the information and data resources.
This exciting news is coming from GODAN Action Project funded by Department for International Development, and led by Wageningen UR. The project partners are CTA, Open Data Institute, Agroknow, Land Portal Foundation, FAO of the UN, Institute of Development Studies and AidData. Register by 5th November for GODAN Action course entitled Open Data and Research Data Management in Agriculture and Nutrition that will be offering five modules on (1) open data principles, (2) using open data, (3) making the data open, (4) architectural and semantic interoperability, and (5) intellectual property, copyright and licensing. The course will run in the middle of November for four weeks. |
AGORA Online Course entitled AGORA : Fundamentals of Information Literacy and Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture is provided by FAO in collaboration with Research4Life. The course aims to provide information about the fundamentals of information literacy competencies and develop necessary skills to access and effectively use AGORA (Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture). The course will run between 23rd October and 5th November. For more information, please visit the course web page. |
Another online course - entitled Access to Scientific Information Resources in Agriculture (ASIRA) for Low-income Countries (also provided by FAO in collaboration with Research4Life) - will take place on 30th October 2017 and last for three weeks until 19th November. Up to now, 300+ people have been trained including researchers, librarians, practitioners and students in the agricultural domain. The course is enriched with number of webinars designed to offer learners a broader perspective in the relevant areas. More information about the course is available on the course web page. |

BEYOND THE Buzzword "Data" : action-oriented Strategies in Data Management
Modern data management is not about “managing data … modernly”, it goes beyond buzzwords ... It provides, rather, a comprehensive view of data generated and curated according to a modern concept - Data Management Plan (DMP) that helps you manage your data, meet funder requirements, and helps others use your data if shared.
Modern data management should outline any processing activities, as well as include data protection and security issues to ensure institutional data compliance with national, regional and international regulations.
