It is indisputable that access to (agriculture) science and technology literature and data is important for :
- the global scientific communities in advancement of research and development (see: Agriculture, Research and Development, ARD);
- policy makers and governments, - to find out concrete solutions to local and cross-domain problems and to contribute to improving effectiveness and garnering greater results through data-driven decision-making .
In the agricultural domain, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN not only curates and shares agricultural information, but also produces advice upon it, which is then promoted through its knowledge portal.
Focus on AGRIS achievements
Alongside PubAg, TEEAL and CAB Abstracts, AGRIS (International System for Agricultural Science and Technology) of the FAO is one of the major bibliographic databases used for locating bibliographical agricultural information online.
AGRIS content
To date, with about 9,030,000 bibliographical records - - out of which about 2,000,000 records contain explicit links to the full text of the record - - AGRIS services aim at providing better access and visibility to the information resources in agriculture and related domains.
AGRIS content comes from more than 350 data providers (research centres, development programes, international and national organizations) from over 140 countries worldwide (50% of content comes from developing countries and other 50% - from developed countries). It is worth noting that for some data providers, AGRIS is the only online platform that allows the diffusion on the web of local scientific research.
More than 85 % of all AGRIS records are indexed with AGROVOC multilingual thesaurus. Thanks to AGROVOC - used as backbone to link AGRIS records and externals resources - AGRIS not only can retrieve similar content in Google, but also “say” how many records “talk” about a specific continent, country. For instance, considering the list of all countries in Africa as AGROVOC subjects and querying AGRIS, one obtains 150,885 records about Africa!

Contribute to AGRIS with your Content : Support for Data Providers :
If you want to contribute your records from a Journal or a Repository, please send [email protected] information of your harvesting environment, and AGRIS Team will come back to you to realize the collection of your metadata which can be published (after a process of data cleaning, enrichment, and conversion) in the AGRIS database.
Another fast way to publish data is to send the XML files (AGRIS AP XML format or better) directly to [email protected]. For more information, read: The AGRIS Application Profile for the International Information System on Agricultural Sciences and Technology.
Traffic on AGRIS website and User Activity so far …
Comparing the trimester July-September 2017 with the same period in the previous year, you can see that the traffic on the AGRIS website has increased by more than 100% ! The image shows also the list of top 10 countries from where AGRIS was accessed and the number of sessions per continent :

AGRIS team continues to work on consolidating the AGRIS platform to increase efficiency and sustainability of its workflows and processes.

Besides AGRIS, PubAg, TEEAL, CAB Abstracts, - thousands of peer-reviewed agriculture-related informaiton resources online can be retrieved for free or with low cost access - by Group A or Group B countries - through Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA) channel. A plethora of Open Access (institutional and disciplinary) repositories, Research Data Repositories and Open Access Journals in place helps further overcoming obstacles to increase access to cross-domain scientific outcomes worldwide.

Open Research Data per default and Opt-Out possibilities Starting with the 2017 work programme, the pilot on Open Research Data (ORD) was extended to cover all thematic areas of HORIZON 2020*, thus realising the Commission's ambition of "open research data per default", to improve and maximise access to and re-use of research data generated by Horizon 2020 projects. |

Open per default data are needed to validate the results presented in scientific publications and should be compliant with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-usable) data requisites. Other data can be provided by the beneficiaries on a voluntary basis, and this should be stated in their Data Management Plans (DMP). Besides, the ORD pilot retaining opt-out possibilities, taking into account the need to balance openness and protection of scientific information, commercialisation and intellectual property right (IPR), privacy concerns, security as well as data management and preservation questions through research data lifecycle. Projects may decide not to participate in the pilot ('opt-out') at any stage of the project lifecycle. |
An important fact to take into account when sharing your data (Why? How? Where?) is that There is no One-Size Fits-All Data-Sharing solution ... and that the importance of a holistic approach to the challenges faced by researchers in this context should not be underestimated.
