The Open Researcher and Contributor ID initiative (ORCID) is a registry where researchers sign-up for a unique personal identifier.These identifiers, and the relationships among them, can be linked to the researcher's output to enhance the scientific discovery process and to improve the efficiency of the scholarly communication process.

ORCID for researchers

Since after registration, a researcher obtains a digital identifier, this can be integrated into key research workflows - such as manuscripts and grant submissions. Besides researchers attaching their digital identity to their research outputs, ORCID will facilitate easier collaboration across different research information systems. ORCID records holds non-sensitive information such as name, email, organization name, and research activities and data privacy is respected.

ORCID for organisations

The Open Researcher and Contributor ID initiative, is useful for research funders, publishers, and research organisations amongst other many other organisations in the research process. For example, publishers could use this service for three scenarios, identifying authors, simplifying manuscript submission,and to improve author searching ; while research organisations can use the ORCID record to update institutional repositories, grant management systems, and intellectual property databases.
