Data and Information that directly impact people’s lives is increasingly accessible but civil society is falling behind in making effective use of it...
To help cope with this challenge, in 2012, the School of Data was launched, - as a collaboration between Open Knowledge International (OKI) and Peer-to-Peer University (P2PU), setting up an online platform to teach data skills.
Nowadays, through its global network of data literacy practitioners and trainers, School of Data seeks to address different data skills gaps in order to amplify the messages of civil society through the use of data. To date, the School of Data counts:
|
SCHOOL OF DATA HAS THREE PROGRAMMES:
1. | Global Fellowship |
2. | Data-Literacy Curriculum (adapted and translated to 10 languages) that comprises stand-alone learning modules (ONLINE COURSES) & OFFLINE TRAINING |
3. | Data Network Lab. Since the School of Data Network works according to the concept of Working Groups having their mission and aligned strategies (among the various organisations that are members of the network), it achieves great impact in data literacy. |
Each programme has its own features and cycles, with the ultimate goal of bringing data literacy where it matters the most, using fresh and relatable methodologies.
HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL OF DATA NETWORK
You - as Organisation and Individual - are most welcome to Join School of Data Network.
Individuals or Organisations should first establish a relationship of trust with the network, by (*) using School of Data materials, (*) organising training events or collaborating with projects.
Potential members should apply sending a Letter of Intention to the Coordination Team with their vision and strategy to bring data literacy to their region with School of Data.
Members of School of Data Network work to support civil society organizations (CSOs), journalists, and citizens to engage with and use data in their efforts to create better, more equitable and more sustainable societies.
Over the past four years, School of Data has succeeded in developing and sustaining a thriving network of data literacy practitioners across Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.
School for Data methodologies and approach for delivering hands-on data training and data literacy skills - such as the data pipeline and the data expedition - have now been replicated in various formats by organisations around the world.
Two of central philosophies of the School of Data are LEARN BY DOING and WORK WITH REAL DATA... You’ll go in circles, get lost, make mistakes, and sometimes not reach your goal. But that’s fine! This is best way to get familiar with working with data. And you may even make some new friends along the way. |
